As the popularity of cycling continues to grow in Southeast Asia, the urban planners of the big cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have grudgingly recognised they must cater to the needs of this burgeoning group, but the progress is at best lamentably slow or at worst, nonexistent. If the powers-that-be up here are looking for a regional blueprint then they could do a lot worse than casting an eye straight down south to the Australian city of Perth.
Cycling is simply an accepted part of life in Perth and this is reflected in the extensive number and range of cycling events throughout the year. One of the most important is Velofest, a week-long celebration that has three showcase pieces: the Telethon Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma, a non-competitive charity event; the Woodside Tour de Perth, a four-day professional stage race and part of the Subaru National Road Series that helps showcase Australia’s best talent; and the UWCT Perth, a qualifying event for the world amateur cycling championships.
