Elyas Steps up Ranks to Win National Road Racing Title

It was a day for youth at the 2016 Singapore National Road Racing Championships yesterday as Mohamed Elyas swept to victory in the men’s elite race at the Seletar North Link Circuit, the 19-year-old Cycleworx rider unleashing a devastating kick in the finale that left the rest of the field floundering in his wake.

With a pedigree of being a former Singapore junior champ, Elyas’ victory was not entirely unexpected, but the women’s elite race came up with an unexpected champion as Yiwei Luo (pictured above) outsprinted the overwhelming favourite Dinah Chan to claim the title and the national champ’s jersey.

Goh and Chan take titles as Singapore TT nationals return

The Singapore Time Trial National Championships returned after a two-year absence on May 22 with Goh Choon Huat and Dinah Chan crowned the respective men’s and women’s national champions at the Seletar North Link Circuit on what was a glorious Sunday morning of racing.

Sunday’s TT national champs was also part of the 2016 OCBC Cycle Road Series and a big turnout of competitors (and what seemed like just as many spectators) racing across 11 categories showed once again that there is a huge appetite for road racing in Singapore if events actually take place.

The atmosphere was festive, in big part thanks to a wide selection of Singapore cycling clubs erecting their team tents course-side. The weather also played its part in the event’s success with an early-hours storm clearing to leave dry roads, cool temperatures and hardly a breath of wind; perfect conditions for time trialling.

Ho powers to solo win at Tour de Barelang

In what was a day for the breakaways at the Cycosports Tour de Barelang, Ho Jun Rong (JR Cycle Racing) won the elite Cat 1 contest in impressive fashion with a series of attacks in the closing stages that methodically dismantled the nine-man group that had led the race for much of the morning last Saturday. While the Tour de Barelang takes place on the Indonesian island of Batam, it is in fact one of the key events on the Singapore road racing calendar. As such, the vast majority of the 200-plus competitors for what was the fourth edition of the race gathered before dawn at Singapore’s Harbourfront Centre before boarding two chartered ferries for the short trip to the port of Sekupang on Batam.
