Cyclist Teh ready to serve at SEA Games

When the 28th South East Asian Games begins with much fanfare next week, bike racing will get a rare moment in the Singapore sporting sun. Swimmers, footballers, table tennis players and even those fine athletic specimens the 10-pin bowlers normally hog the back page headlines, but maybe that will change by the end of the SEA Games after the cyclists in the eight-strong local squad have strutted their stuff on the roads of downtown Singapore.

It’s a huge honour for all of those riders to have been selected and for one young man who only took up the sport of cycling four and a half years ago, it’s a dream come true. It wasn’t that 21-year-old Noel Jing Long Teh didn’t want to ride, it was a case of him not being allowed to.

The Tour de Barelang – an instant classic

While certainly not as long as Milan-San Remo or as hilly as Liege-Bastogne-Liege, the Cycosports Tour de Barelang in its short existence has firmly earned its place as a one-day classic on the Singapore amateur road cycling calendar. Of course the irony is that this challenging one-day contest takes place not in the Lion City but on the neighboring Indonesian island of Batam.

Recognising the dearth of events in Singapore, Cycosports announced its arrival on the scene in 2013 and its concept of staging “local” events overseas with what they called the Batam Six Bridges race. It has since been rebranded the Tour de Barelang at the behest of the local authorities, but the third edition of the race held on May 16 is still the same event and without a doubt the most popular contest on the Cycosports calendar.

It's been a while since I published a personal race report, so here's a few words on my escapades during last Saturday's Cycosports Tour de Barelang, also known as the Batam Six Bridges race. I made the podium, but it was from a straightforward race and it was a tough, tough day in the office.

Shimano Cycling World: industry to art

The name Shimano is synonymous with quality in the world of cycling. Although nominally one of the big three along with Campagnolo and SRAM in the parts and components sector, in reality it dominates the market. It’s achieved that position through continued innovation and excellent customer service, so it’s very fitting that a company that has played such a leading role in the modern history of the sport has come up with an unparalleled celebration of cycling in the shape of Shimano Cycling World at the Singapore Sports Hub.
