In cycling terms, Malaysia is best known for the hills and mountains of the Cameron Highlands, Bukit Fraser and of course Genting Highlands, one of the toughest climbs in the world. But Malaysia also holds another hidden cycling gem, the island of Penang.
With an international airport offering direct connections to Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta and most other big regional cities, the island is a popular tourist destination, with its colonial-era architecture, vibrant mix of cultures and cuisine drawing millions of visitors to the “Pearl of the Orient” each year. Many of those visiting millions are no doubt cyclists who are perhaps unaware of the great riding to be had on the island.
